Complications - Appendectomy, open

  1. Intraoperative Complications

    • Injuries to other intestinal sections
With a clear focus, no further exploration.
    • Injuries to vessels
      Avoid "tearing" at the mesentery.
    • Injuries to nerves
Do not choose the incision too caudally (N. ilioinguinalis).
  2. Postoperative complications

    • Wound healing disorder
Open the wound, rinse, and apply a “moist” dressing twice daily.
    • Intra-abdominal abscess
Need for revision or percutaneous drainage.
    • Postoperative ileus
      Paralytic: conservative ileus therapy.
      Mechanical (adhesion): revision.
    • Stump insufficiency
Revision and oversewing, if not possible, tangential cecal pole resection or ileocecal resection, depending on findings.
