The port system uses the subclavian vein as access to the central venous system.
The first image sequence of this contribution in the following chapter Implementation illustrates the topography of the vein, which is easily accessible via percutaneous puncture, in its course above the first rib, behind the clavicle, and in front of the anterior scalene muscle.
The large-caliber vein uses the clavipectoral fascia at the periosteum of the clavicle as a suspension and, after its union with the internal jugular vein, extends to the brachiocephalic vein to the right atrium of the heart.
The catheter of the port system follows this path.
