Complications - Hemorrhoidectomy according to Milligan-Morgan

  1. Intraoperative Complications

With correct technique, careful dissection, and subtle intermittent hemostasis, intraoperative complications are very rare. Stronger arterial bleeding can be controlled with direct suturing.

  2. Postoperative complications

Complication rates between 5% and 15% have been reported in the literature. These include:

    • Bleeding
    • Stenosis
    • Fissure
    • Fistula
    • Abscess
    • Anal thrombosis
    • Urinary retention
    • persistent pain issues

In rare cases, continence disorders (usually due to incorrect surgical technique) and retroperitoneal sepsis have been reported. Life-threatening complications occur at a rate of 0.01-0.1%.
