With correct technique, careful dissection, and subtle intermittent hemostasis, intraoperative complications are very rare. Stronger arterial bleeding can be controlled with direct suturing.

Postoperative complications
Complication rates between 5% and 15% have been reported in the literature. These include:
- Bleeding
- Stenosis
- Fissure
- Fistula
- Abscess
- Anal thrombosis
- Urinary retention
- persistent pain issues
In rare cases, continence disorders (usually due to incorrect surgical technique) and retroperitoneal sepsis have been reported. Life-threatening complications occur at a rate of 0.01-0.1%.
