With the correct technique, careful dissection, and subtle intermittent hemostasis (e.g., bipolar electrocoagulation), intraoperative complications are quite rare. More severe arterial bleeding can be controlled by direct suture ligation.

Intraoperative complications
-
Postoperative complications
- Inflammation /abscess formation in the region of the wall plication
- Supraanal rectal stenosis → this can occur in rather rare cases because of a bulging/voluminous muscular cuff/muscularis plication and can then almost always be treated digitally or by intervention with bougie/dilation.
- Persistent or new onset postoperative incontinence → the longer the rectal prolapse had existed, the lower the chances that the sphincter will regain full functionality; if necessary, also employ SNS (sacral nerve stimulation).
- Postoperative defecation difficulties → dietary changes, anal irrigation
- Recurrent prolapse (around 13-31%)
