Bleeding
If massive intraoperative bleeding occurs (e.g., from the Kocher’s vein or the inferior thyroid artery), it is first tamponaded and under continuous suction, an attempt is made to identify the vessel in order to clamp and ligate it.
Detection of signal loss in IONM (intraoperative neuromonitoring)
If it is the first side of a planned bilateral resection, the resection of the contralateral side should be avoided to prevent the risk of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis.
Failure to find altered parathyroid tissue or failure to find the parathyroids
Abort the procedure and extend the diagnostics.
