Complications - Femoropopliteal bypass on the right with PTFE prosthesis (PIII)

  1. Intraoperative complications

    Arterial dissection

    • Graft extension mandatory

    Venous bleeding

Since the vena poplitea runs parallel to the arteria poplitea and, in addition, the epifascial veins and their side branches not infrequently encase the arteria poplitea, injuries to the veins may result in troublesome bleeding.

    • Severe venous bleeding -> compression and targeted sutures
    • Prevention: careful dissection of the A. poplitea with transection of transverse veins and gentle mobilization of the large main veins; if necessary, encircle them with vessel loops and retract them to the side

    Suture stenosis

    • Dilation, possibly surgical revision

    Distal embolisation

    • Embolectomy
Postoperative complications

Secondary bleeding, haematomaCauses: technical errors such as suture line failure; slipped ligature
