The bile ducts transport the bile fluid from the liver to the duodenum. In this way, the bile fluid with the bile acids contributes to the digestion of fatty foods. The bile ducts begin intrahepatically with small ducts, which then merge into segmental ducts and later into the right and left hepatic duct (Ductus hepaticus dexter et sinister), which unite in the common duct (Ductus hepaticus communis) and descend from the liver. At their junction, these two ducts form the Ductus hepaticus communis. In the further course of this duct to the duodenum, the Ductus cysticus joins, which comes from the gallbladder (Vesica biliaris). Together, they now form the Ductus choledochus, which empties into the duodenum. The Papilla duodeni major (Vater’s papilla) represents a sphincter that regulates the bile flow from the D. choledochus into the duodenum.
