Condylomata acuminata, also known as genital warts, are a viral disease that can affect certain body regions such as the anus with the anal canal, the external genitalia, and the cervix.
This viral disease is among the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The causative agent is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
It infects epithelial cells of the skin/mucosa and can induce tumor-like growth in the form of warts in the infected cells.
There are more than 100 different subtypes of this HPV virus, with certain subtypes having a particular risk potential for dysplasia and malignant transformation.
An HPV infection can lead to dysplasia of the skin/mucosa up to malignant degeneration (anal carcinoma), especially in immunosuppressed individuals (e.g., HIV patients, patients under medical immunosuppression).
